Pet Medicine Dose Calculator
Last updated: June 2026
Formula
Reference dose = pet weight in kg x dose rate. This tool only covers a limited list and must not be used as a prescribing decision.
About this calculator
The Pet Medicine Dose Calculator gives limited reference-only dose calculations for a small set of commonly discussed dog and cat medicines. It is deliberately cautious and includes a strong vet warning because medication mistakes can seriously harm pets.
Dose-by-weight method
For the limited medicines included, the calculator multiplies pet weight by a reference dose rate. It does not diagnose, prescribe, or confirm whether a medicine is safe for your pet.
- reference dose = pet weight in kg x dose rate
How to use the pet medicine dose calculator
- Read the vet warning first.
- Choose dog or cat.
- Enter pet weight in kilograms.
- Choose one of the limited listed medicines.
- Review the reference dose and medicine note.
- Confirm all medication decisions with a vet before giving anything.
Worked examples
Reference fenbendazole calculation
Input: 10kg pet, 50mg/kg reference rate
Calculation: 10 x 50 = 500mg.
Result: Reference dose 500mg, only if appropriate under vet/product guidance.
Reference kaolin paste calculation
Input: 8kg pet, 1.5ml/kg midpoint reference
Calculation: 8 x 1.5 = 12ml.
Result: Reference dose 12ml, subject to product label and vet advice.
Why the disclaimer matters
Dogs and cats can react very differently to medicines. Human medications, wrong products, wrong concentrations, duplicate active ingredients, age, pregnancy, liver or kidney disease, and other medications can all affect safety.
What this calculator does not do
It does not decide whether a medicine is suitable, whether symptoms need urgent care, whether the product concentration is correct, or whether a cat can receive a medicine commonly used in dogs.
Strong veterinary disclaimer
Always consult your vet before giving any medication to your pet. This calculator is for reference only and does not replace veterinary advice. Never give human medications to pets without specific vet guidance.
Frequently asked questions
Can I give human medicine to my pet?
Not unless a vet specifically tells you to. Some human medicines are dangerous or fatal to pets.
Why are only a few medicines included?
The list is deliberately limited to avoid implying broad prescribing advice.
Can cats use dog medication?
Do not assume that. Cats are sensitive to some substances and need cat-specific veterinary guidance.
What if my pet ate medicine accidentally?
Contact a vet urgently and tell them the product, strength, amount, time, and pet weight.
Does this calculate product strength?
No. Product concentrations vary, so you must check the label and vet instructions.

What does this mean?
This calculator is designed to help you understand the likely number before you make a decision or start an application.
Your result should be checked against official UK guidance, especially if your circumstances include dependants, exemptions, prior leave, or a complex immigration history.
Treat the figure as a planning tool rather than legal advice. Where the answer affects an application deadline or major payment, speak to an authorised adviser.
