Speed Calculator

Last updated: June 2026

Mode
Speed
20.833 m/s
In km/h
75 km/h
In mph
46.603 mph

Formula

Speed = distance / time. Distance = speed x time. Time = distance / speed. Inputs are converted to metres and seconds before calculation.

About this calculator

The Speed Calculator helps students, drivers, runners, cyclists, and anyone checking a journey or physics question calculate speed, distance, or time. It converts common distance, speed, and time units into a consistent base before showing the result, so you can compare metres per second, kilometres per hour, and miles per hour without doing several manual conversions.

Speed, distance, and time formulas

Speed is distance divided by time. The same relationship can be rearranged to find distance or time when the other two values are known.

  • speed = distance / time
  • distance = speed x time
  • time = distance / speed

How to use the speed calculator

  1. Choose whether you want to find speed, distance, or time.
  2. Enter the two values you already know.
  3. Select the correct units for distance and speed.
  4. Enter time using hours, minutes, and seconds where needed.
  5. Check the main result and the alternative speed units.
  6. Use the worked steps to understand the calculation.

Worked examples

Car journey average speed

Input: 150 km travelled in 2 hours

Calculation: speed = 150 / 2

Result: 75 km/h, which is about 46.6 mph

Running pace check

Input: 5 km completed in 25 minutes

Calculation: speed = 5 km / 0.4167 hours

Result: About 12 km/h

Speed vs velocity

In everyday use, speed means how fast something is moving. In physics, velocity also includes direction. A car travelling north at 60 mph and a car travelling south at 60 mph have the same speed but different velocities.

Average speed vs instant speed

This calculator gives average speed across the whole distance and time. Instantaneous speed is the speed at one moment, such as the number shown on a speedometer.

Educational use only

This calculator is for general educational use. Real journeys can include stops, acceleration, traffic, GPS error, and route measurement differences.

Frequently asked questions

What is the speed formula?

Speed equals distance divided by time.

Can I calculate distance from speed and time?

Yes. Distance equals speed multiplied by time.

Does the calculator show mph and km/h?

Yes, speed results include common equivalent units where useful.

Is speed the same as velocity?

Not exactly. Velocity includes direction, while speed only measures how fast something moves.

Why is average speed lower than expected?

Average speed includes the whole time period. Stops, slow sections, and acceleration reduce the average.

What does this mean?

This calculator is designed to help you understand the likely number before you make a decision or start an application.

Your result should be checked against official UK guidance, especially if your circumstances include dependants, exemptions, prior leave, or a complex immigration history.

Treat the figure as a planning tool rather than legal advice. Where the answer affects an application deadline or major payment, speak to an authorised adviser.
