TV Dimensions Calculator
Last updated: June 2026
Formula
For a 16:9 screen, width = diagonal x 0.872 and height = diagonal x 0.490. Other ratios use the same diagonal geometry.

About this calculator
The TV Dimensions Calculator converts a diagonal TV size into approximate screen width, height, and area. It helps you check whether a TV will fit on a wall, cabinet, alcove, media unit, or mounting space before buying.
TV dimensions formula
TV sizes are measured diagonally. The calculator uses the selected aspect ratio to split that diagonal into width and height.
- 16:9 width = diagonal x 0.872
- 16:9 height = diagonal x 0.490
- screen area = width x height
How to use the TV dimensions calculator
- Enter the advertised TV size in inches.
- Choose the aspect ratio.
- Read the screen width and height in inches and centimetres.
- Check the approximate total unit size with bezel allowance.
- Compare common TV sizes in the reference table.
- Confirm the manufacturer dimensions before ordering furniture or wall brackets.
Worked examples
55 inch 16:9 TV
Input: 55 inch diagonal, 16:9
Calculation: Width = 55 x 0.872, height = 55 x 0.490.
Result: About 48 inches wide and 27 inches high, before bezel and stand.
65 inch TV in centimetres
Input: 65 inch diagonal, 16:9
Calculation: Width is about 56.7 inches, then multiply by 2.54.
Result: About 144cm screen width.
Why diagonal size is not width
A 55 inch TV is not 55 inches wide. The advertised size is measured from one screen corner to the opposite corner. Width depends on aspect ratio.
Remember the bezel and stand
Manufacturers quote physical product dimensions separately because bezels, speakers, stand feet, and mounting points vary. Use the calculator for screen geometry, then check the exact product specification.
Dimension estimate disclaimer
This calculator estimates screen dimensions from diagonal size and aspect ratio. Product dimensions can differ because of bezels, frames, stands, speakers, and wall-mount hardware.
Frequently asked questions
Are most TVs 16:9?
Yes. Most modern TVs are 16:9. Ultrawide displays are more common for monitors than living-room TVs.
Does the calculator include the stand?
No. It includes a simple bezel allowance, but stand dimensions must be checked on the product page.
Why is screen area useful?
Screen area helps compare how much larger one TV feels than another. A 65 inch TV has much more area than a 55 inch TV.
Can I use this for monitors?
Yes, if you know the diagonal size and aspect ratio.
What unit should I measure my wall in?
Measure wall or furniture space in centimetres, then compare against the calculator width and height.
