TV Size Calculator
Last updated: June 2026
Formula
Room mode converts viewing distance to inches, then divides by a resolution factor. TV mode estimates viewing distance as screen size x 1.0 to 1.5, converted from inches to metres.
| Distance | 4K TV | 1080p TV |
|---|---|---|
| 2m | 40-55in | 32-40in |
| 2.5m | 50-65in | 40-50in |
| 3m | 55-75in | 50-60in |
| 3.5m | 65-85in | 55-65in |
| 4m | 75-85in | 65-75in |
About this calculator
The TV Size Calculator helps you choose a sensible screen size for a room or check the ideal viewing distance for a TV you already own. It is useful when comparing 4K, 1080p, and 8K screens, planning a living room layout, or deciding whether a larger TV will feel immersive without being uncomfortable.
TV size and viewing distance method
The calculator converts viewing distance into inches, then applies a resolution-based distance factor. Higher-resolution screens can usually be viewed closer because individual pixels are less visible.
- distance inches = viewing distance metres x 39.3701
- recommended screen size = distance inches / resolution factor
- ideal distance range = TV size x 1.0 to 1.5 inches, converted to metres
How to use the TV size calculator
- Choose whether you know the room distance or already have a TV size.
- Enter viewing distance in metres, or enter TV screen size in inches.
- Choose the screen resolution.
- Review the recommended range rather than treating one number as exact.
- Compare the result with the TV size guide table.
- Allow for cabinet depth, wall mounting height, and personal preference.
Worked examples
Choosing a 4K TV for a living room
Input: 3m viewing distance
Calculation: 3m x 39.3701 = 118.1 inches, then divide by a 4K factor.
Result: A mid-to-large 4K TV around the 55-75 inch range is usually sensible.
Checking distance for a 55 inch TV
Input: 55 inch TV
Calculation: 55 x 1.0 x 2.54 = 140cm, and 55 x 1.5 x 2.54 = 210cm.
Result: A viewing distance of about 1.4m to 2.1m is a useful comfort range.
4K vs 1080p viewing distance
A 4K TV has more pixels than a 1080p TV at the same screen size, so you can generally sit closer before the picture looks pixelated. That is why larger 4K TVs often work in rooms where a 1080p TV of the same size might feel too close.
Content quality still matters. A large screen showing low-bitrate streams or old SD content can look worse than the same content on a smaller display.
TV size guide for UK rooms
Many UK living rooms have viewing distances around 2.5m to 3.5m. In that range, common choices are 50-65 inches for mixed viewing and 65-75 inches for a more cinema-like 4K setup.
Common TV size mistakes
- Measuring from the wall rather than from the viewer position.
- Ignoring the TV stand, cabinet width, soundbar, or wall mount clearance.
- Choosing size based only on price rather than viewing distance and content quality.
- Assuming 8K content is widely available for all viewing.
Viewing comfort disclaimer
This calculator is a planning guide only. Viewing comfort depends on eyesight, seating layout, content quality, motion sensitivity, room brightness, and personal preference.
Frequently asked questions
Is a bigger TV always better?
Not always. A bigger TV can be more immersive, but it can feel overwhelming if you sit very close or mostly watch low-resolution content.
Should I use the minimum or maximum size?
Use the range as guidance. Choose the smaller end for casual viewing and the larger end for a more cinema-style setup.
Does 8K change viewing distance?
8K can support closer viewing, but available 8K content is still limited, so many buyers should prioritise panel quality over resolution alone.
How is TV size measured?
TV size is the diagonal screen measurement in inches, not the width of the TV cabinet.
Should I wall mount the TV?
Wall mounting can save space, but height, cable access, wall strength, and viewing angle need checking.

What does this mean?
This calculator is designed to help you understand the likely number before you make a decision or start an application.
Your result should be checked against official UK guidance, especially if your circumstances include dependants, exemptions, prior leave, or a complex immigration history.
Treat the figure as a planning tool rather than legal advice. Where the answer affects an application deadline or major payment, speak to an authorised adviser.
