About this calculator

The ILR Eligibility Calculator estimates when you may qualify for Indefinite Leave to Remain based on your visa route, residence period, and absences from the UK. It is designed for planning only: ILR eligibility depends on immigration category, continuous residence, absences, lawful status, English language, Life in the UK test, and suitability requirements.

Methodology

The calculator compares your qualifying start date and route length with the earliest possible settlement date, then checks absence totals against common residence limits.

  • Earliest ILR date = qualifying start date + route residence period
  • Absence total = sum of days outside the UK in each relevant period

How to use the Ilr Eligibility

  1. Enter the main value or details requested by the calculator.
  2. Check the unit, date, rate, or category selected before calculating.
  3. Review the result and any supporting breakdown shown on the page.
  4. Change one input at a time if you want to compare scenarios.
  5. Keep the result with the source record if you need to refer back to it later.

Worked example

Five-year route

Input: Visa start date 1 June 2021, five-year settlement route

Calculation: 1 June 2021 + 5 years

Result: Estimated qualifying date around 1 June 2026, subject to route rules and absences

Planning scenario

Input: A user enters the main details requested by the Ilr Eligibility.

Calculation: Earliest ILR date = qualifying start date + route residence period

Result: The result gives an estimate that can be checked against source documents, official guidance, or the relevant record.

How to read the result

The Ilr Eligibility is designed to make the method visible, not only to produce a final number. Read the result alongside the formula, the assumptions entered, and any supporting notes on the calculator page.

If the result affects money, eligibility, deadlines, health, study planning, or legal rights, keep a copy of the inputs used. That makes it easier to explain or update the estimate later.

Inputs worth checking

Dates and periods
Dates, billing periods, tax years, academic years, and deadline periods can change the result. Make sure the period entered matches the document or question you are checking.
Rates and thresholds
Where rates, thresholds, tariffs, or grade boundaries are involved, use the current source rather than an old note or rounded memory.
Rounding
Small differences are normal when a calculator rounds intermediate steps differently from a bill, statement, payslip, or official table.

Limitations

This calculator provides general information only and is not legal advice.

  • ILR rules vary by route and can change.
  • Suitability, documents, lawful residence, and absences require careful checking.

Frequently asked questions

Does this guarantee ILR eligibility?

No. It estimates timing only and cannot assess every Home Office rule or document requirement.

Do absences matter?

Yes. Absences can affect continuous residence depending on the route and relevant period.

Can I apply before the exact five-year date?

Some routes allow applications shortly before qualifying, but timing rules should be checked carefully.

What should I check before relying on the Ilr Eligibility?

Check the inputs against the source document or real-world record that controls the calculation. For rules-based topics, also check the latest official guidance because thresholds and definitions can change.

Can I use the result as a final decision?

Use the result as an educational estimate and planning aid. It should not replace professional advice, official decisions, lender quotes, medical guidance, legal advice, or tax advice where those apply.

What is ILR?

Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) is a form of settlement in the UK. It gives you the right to live and work in the UK without any immigration time limit. After holding ILR for 12 months, you may be eligible to apply for British citizenship.

How long do I need to have lived in the UK?

Most visa routes require 5 continuous years of lawful residence. Some routes - including Innovator Founder and certain Global Talent endorsements - require only 3 years. The qualifying period starts from the date your first eligible visa was granted or your entry date, whichever is later.

What counts as continuous residence?

Continuous residence means you have not been absent from the UK for more than 180 days in any 12-month period during your qualifying period. Short trips abroad for holidays or business are permitted within this limit. A single long absence or frequent shorter absences that breach the 180-day rule can break your continuous residence.

Can I apply early?

You may submit your ILR application up to 28 days before your qualifying date. Applications submitted more than 28 days early will be refused and fees will not be refunded. Plan your application carefully and do not apply too soon.

What happens after ILR?

Once you hold ILR, you can live and work in the UK indefinitely. After 12 months with ILR, you may be eligible to apply for British citizenship through naturalisation. The citizenship application requires a separate process and fees.
