Formula

Area = length x width. L-shaped rooms add section A and section B. Order area = area x (1 + waste percentage).

About this calculator

Calculate how much laminate, engineered wood, solid wood, vinyl, LVT, carpet, or tile flooring to order in square metres. It includes waste allowance, pack calculation, and an optional price estimate.

Flooring area method

The calculator uses metric dimensions and practical UK planning assumptions. Results are estimates, so check product labels, site conditions, and supplier guidance before ordering materials.

  • rectangular area = length x width
  • L-shaped area = section A area + section B area
  • order area = room area x (1 + waste percentage)

How to use the flooring calculator

  1. Choose the project type or measurement mode where the calculator offers one.
  2. Enter all dimensions in metric units.
  3. Add allowances such as coats, waste, pattern repeat, roll width, or bag size where relevant.
  4. Review the main highlighted result first.
  5. Check secondary results such as packs, bags, rolls, posts, or tin combinations.
  6. Round up to supplier pack sizes and confirm the label coverage before buying.

Worked examples

Laminate flooring

Input: 4m x 3m room, straight lay, 10% waste

Calculation: Area 12m² x 1.10 = 13.2m².

Result: Order about 13.2m², then round up to whole packs.

Herringbone pattern

Input: 12m² room with 20% waste

Calculation: 12 x 1.20 = 14.4m².

Result: Order at least 14.4m² before pack rounding.

Why you need a waste allowance

Flooring needs waste for cuts, mistakes, damaged boards, awkward doorways, fireplaces, and future repairs. Straight layouts often need around 10%, while diagonal and herringbone patterns usually need more.

Laminate vs engineered wood

Laminate is usually sold in packs and is often easier to cut. Engineered and solid wood can be more expensive, so accurate pack rounding and waste planning matter more.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing centimetres, millimetres, and metres without converting first.
  • Ordering exact quantities with no allowance for cuts, waste, damage, or uneven surfaces.
  • Forgetting that products are sold in tins, packs, bags, rolls, or boards rather than exact calculated quantities.
  • Using average deductions or coverage rates when the project has unusual shapes, textures, slopes, or access limits.
  • Not checking manufacturer instructions before final ordering.

Home improvement estimate disclaimer

This calculator is for general DIY planning only. It is not a substitute for a professional survey, structural design, building control advice, manufacturer instructions, or installer measurement.

  • Actual product coverage and pack sizes vary by supplier.
  • Site conditions can change material quantities.
  • Structural, roofing, electrical, gas, and regulated building work may need qualified advice.

Frequently asked questions

Should I order by m² or by pack?

Use m² to estimate the requirement, then round up to whole packs because retailers do not usually split flooring packs.

Is 10% waste enough?

For simple rectangular rooms, often yes. Use more for diagonal, herringbone, complex rooms, or if you want spare boards.

Does the calculator include underlay?

It estimates floor covering. Underlay is usually based on the room area and may be sold in rolls or packs separately.

Can I use it for L-shaped rooms?

Yes. Select L-shaped and enter two rectangular sections, then the calculator adds them together.

Why does pack size matter?

Pack size determines how many full packs you must buy after the waste allowance has been added.

What does this mean?

This calculator is designed to help you understand the likely number before you make a decision or start an application.

Your result should be checked against official UK guidance, especially if your circumstances include dependants, exemptions, prior leave, or a complex immigration history.

Treat the figure as a planning tool rather than legal advice. Where the answer affects an application deadline or major payment, speak to an authorised adviser.
