Dog Healthy Weight Calculator
Last updated: June 2026
About this calculator
The Dog Healthy Weight Calculator compares a dog current weight with common breed or size weight ranges and gives a simple status. It also explains Body Condition Score, which vets use because breed ranges alone cannot capture every dog build.
Dog weight comparison method
The calculator compares current weight with a breed or size range, then estimates percentage difference from the midpoint.
- ideal midpoint = (minimum ideal + maximum ideal) / 2
- percent from midpoint = (current weight - midpoint) / midpoint x 100
- weight to lose or gain = distance from nearest range boundary
How to use the dog healthy weight calculator
- Choose your dog breed or select mixed breed/other.
- For mixed breed, choose the closest size category.
- Enter current weight in kilograms.
- Review the ideal weight range and status.
- Read the Body Condition Score guide.
- Speak to a vet before starting a diet or weight-gain plan.
Worked examples
Labrador at 30kg
Input: Labrador Retriever, current weight 30kg
Calculation: Breed range 25-36kg.
Result: Within the listed range, but body condition still matters.
Beagle at 14kg
Input: Beagle, current weight 14kg
Calculation: Breed range 9-11kg.
Result: Above the listed range, so vet-guided weight review is sensible.
Body Condition Score
Body Condition Score is usually more useful than weight alone. An ideal dog often has ribs that are easy to feel without being sharply visible, a visible waist from above, and an abdominal tuck from the side.
Why breed ranges are only a guide
Dogs within the same breed can vary by sex, build, muscle, working condition, and genetics. Neutering, age, diet, illness, and exercise can also affect weight.

Frequently asked questions
Is breed weight enough to judge health?
No. Breed weight is only a guide. Body condition, muscle, frame size, and vet assessment are important.
What is a healthy Body Condition Score?
On a 1-9 scale, 4-5 is often considered ideal. Your vet can show you how to assess your dog.
How quickly should a dog lose weight?
Dog weight loss should be gradual and vet-guided. Sudden or severe restriction can be unsafe.
Can puppies use this calculator?
No. Puppies need growth-stage assessment and breed-specific guidance from a vet.
What if my breed is not listed?
Choose mixed breed/other and a size category, then use the result as a broad guide only.
